Dorfold Hall 92165 at Crewe

Dorfold Hall Photo: a fantastic Dorfold Hall Photograph Featuring 92165 at Crewe

Photograph Taken On Saturday, October 16, 1965

Another photo from my Brownie 127 camera taken on my second visit to Crewe, in October 1965. Standard 9F 2-10-0 brings a tank train through the west side of Crewe station - the footbridge seen here is the one that spotters used to congregate on so that they could view traffic on the avoiding lines. I've been told that the footbridge has now been demolished. 92165 was new from Crewe Works on 30 April 1958 and was withdrawn from service on 31 March 1968 at Speke Junction (8C). It was scrapped by Cashmore's in Newport by 30 June 1968. The loco is carrying a Birkenhead shed plate (8H) and a chalked head code- 4F80. At the time of the photo a Class 4 train would be defined as "Express freight, livestock, perishable or ballast train pipe-fitted throughout with the automatic vacuum brake operative on 90 per cent of the vehicles." 4F80 might refer to the locos previous working, but might be the correct code for this tank train. I'm hoping that somebody can tell me what 4F80 was in 1965! I try to post one of my railway photos every day to my Flickr account. This was posted on 28 March 2020.View image on Flickr
