WEEK 3 – Poplar/Kirby Kroger, Set I Here’s a closer look at the produce department sign, located on the front wall. But wait, you might be saying, what do you mean “department sign”? There’s only an illustration here! Indeed – that’s all we get with fresh fare. Kinda strange, huh? It’s not that the illustrations aren’t nice or anything, or that the illustrations-as-department signs make the rest of the walls look sparse – as you’ll see, everything looks very nice and cohesively designed, no sparseness at all. But it’s still just a bit of an odd choice to go with these small rectangular pictographs (as Northwest Retail calls them) over any actual words explicitly delineating which departments are which. Now, truthfully, I’m not sure how much department signs are actually needed in stores, insofar as aiding shoppers’ navigation is concerned… I’ve pretty sure I’ve discussed with y’all before (but can’t remember where :P ) how a majority of shoppers seem to ignore aisle markers; it only stands to reason that they could easily find the departments along the perimeter of a store, too, thus eschewing the need for signs to (literally) spell everything out for them. So from that aspect, this décor package actually might be considered an interesting thought experiment. (Whether or not Kroger actually intended for that to be a purpose, though – who knows!)
